ReplyDeleteFunny, my 18 daughter is not keen about my knitting. In fact, I knit her a cabled hat and fingerless mitts this past winter that still have not been worn. My 22 yo son is just the opposite. He loves everything I knit for him and proudly wears the hats and mittens. I'm loving the Knit the Alphabet book and would knit my daughter (yep the one not knit-worthy) a "K" for her college room. I'd also knit names for my younger nephews and nieces- they would love them! ReplyDeleteSitting here listing to your 'no like it' from your son. When my daughter was a toddler (she's now 31), I knit her an Aran sweater. She screamed every time I got it near her. Took a while before I knit for her again.

Hi! I just discovered your podcast, and I had a delightful near-hour earlier today listening to it. I'm sad you'll be on hiatus until July, but I'm glad for the opportunity to catch up on your older episodes before you come back!
ReplyDeleteMy seven-year-old stepdaughter has a VERY uncommon name, and, as such, very rarely gets any items with her name on it. Anything that has her name is, of course, personalized for her. She loves the handknitted items I've made for her, so I'm sure she'd love a set of letters spelling her name for her bedroom here!
I would love to knit little letter pillows to throw all over a bed or a chair. They look really fun!

ReplyDeleteRegarding your son's rejection of the sweater: I feel for you, since that happened to me as well. And my son (around 7) had picked out the pattern and the yarn himself! That was the last sweater I knit for him...
Back to your problem. Maybe if you let him choose special buttons for the sweater, he'll like it better. They could be teddy-bear-shaped, or shaped like cars or trucks... you'll find lots of choices on Etsy. Just a thought!

I'd like to knit my daughter's name but as it has 8 letters it could take a while, so I'd probably stick to initials. And in my dream craft room I would knit 'KNIT'!

We own a private swim club (opened in 1959) called "The Surf Club": I think it would be cool to knit "Surf Club" in several shades of blue for our lobby. ReplyDeleteLoved the story of your little guy and his Gramps sweater. He looks adorable in it, complete with the grouchy look the designers mention on the pattern! I just knit this one, too. The next time that you want him to wear it, you could sneak something into the pocket to surprise him. I love pockets for this reason. When I give this sweater to my niece for her new little one, I plan to tuck in some little thing for her to find. As always, I will be mindful of small things, choking hazards, etc. But pockets are just begging for surprises, and life is better with surprises!

ReplyDeleteI have just had a very similar "No Like It" experience. After lovingly knitting this fabulous tweedy cardigan (I guess that's uk speak for sweater?) that have been on my needles for at least 3 months, darling son responds with exactly that: No like it! Well actually he says "No Like-egg" but it's pretty obvious what he means! I told him he couldn't go outside to play with the dog without it on, which kinda worked but I think he made a pact with her to immediately get it off him by attacking the sleeve! Needless to say cardigan came straight back off...
Anyway, the knitted alphabet book looks awesome, I think I'd endeavour to make enough for the Boy to use when learning to spell! Or at least his name.

Listening to you and your know and the No like it sweater reminded me of my 3 yo. I did the Knitmore trick of getting really cool buttons for her current sweater. I'm also love idea of knitting an alphabet. Right now I'm thinking mid sized letters to put into a bucket to help my 3yo learn her letters. But I'd also like to knit their first initial for their beds. Maybe even exand on the magnet idea and make it so the letters can stick together for their name.

I'd like to knit a letter (an M for Max and an L for Luke) for each of my new nephews, born this April. (I am blb on ravelry.)

I just moved and we are living in a bigger house, so i got my own knitting room. So i would knit something inspirational for my new craft room and then hang it on the wall:)
