Owlet

A couple of weeks before my due date, you may have remembered me mentioning that I had a few unfinished projects on the needles..

Once I finished my Gramps Cardigan, I realized that there was no way I was going to finish up my Rocky Coast before the baby came. Instead I opted for an instant gratification baby knit.

I decided to make our little one a last minute Owlet sweater out of the beautiful Madelinetosh Tosh DK in the Olivia colorway. This tiny sweater only took me a couple of days to knit up.. which was perfect timing!

Do you see the little owls perched on the yoke?

I've always found Kate Davies' Owl sweater patterns so incredibly clever.
I've been meaning to knit myself one for quite awhile.
Eventually it would be great to make one for my daughter as well so that her and her brother can match.
One day I will get around to doing that... :)

Three days before my due date I went into my local craft store in search for the perfect buttons for the owl's eyes.

The lady working that day insisted that this sweater would NEVER fit our baby.
She felt that it was entirely too small and that it was better fit for a doll.
She mentioned this maybe.. um... 10 times.
As I left.. she said... "You wait and see.. that sweater will never fit that baby..."

Well guess what lady... I tried it on the baby.. and it's too big.

So there.

:)

  2. I love this sweater! I want to make a teenager-sized gramps for my brother, but I'm wondering if I might be able to convince him that owls are "in" for teenagers too?! One of my friends MUST be having a baby soon or had a baby last week? Okay, okay - I'll get back to my Ishbel now. :-)

  11. Alana, there is something awesome about your knits and photography. The sweater is droolworthy alone but with the photography, it's over the top.

  12. Congratulations Alana...the baby is beautiful. When I knit my last little boy a sweater/bunting, (while sitting the NICU), I was also told "that will NEVER fit". They were ALL wrong. But I honestly think people forget how very tiny, sweet, curled-up and soft newborns are....and that window of time is sooooo short!

  13. how quickly we for get how little a newborn is, but craft lady keep it to yourself.

    The sweater is just lovely.

  14. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I assume you're going to need to visit the store soon? With your son wearing that sweater, of course. :D

I really want to make that sweater for my granddaughter, and seeing yours and that gorgeous yarn has inspired me. I'm thinking I could afford some Madeline Tosh for such a small project. Um, pardon me, but I have to go over to yarn.com for something ...

  17. haha, that's awesome!! I hate it when people tell you a 'fact' about your unborn child or future style of parenting like they know so much better. Advice is fine, but declarations are so annoying. The owlet sweater is so cute!! And when the little one grows a tiny bit, I bet he'll look super handsome in it.

  21. Another gorgeous sweater for your baby boy! He is absolutely beautiful! Isn't is funny how God surprises us with our kids? I remember being shocked that I had 3 blond, blue-eyed kids and only one with my coloring. Now she had a baby in October who is blond! Sweet precious babies~miracles!! Wishing y'all all the best!

  25. I made the owlet for my second daughter's first birthday this past January. It was SO cute on her! I cannot wait to see your daughter and son in their matching owlets!

And . . . Only six days after your son came into this world my daughter decided to make her appearance, nearly six weeks early! She's still in the NICU but doing very well. And I just keep knitting for her!

  26. That is a beautiful sweater! And, I'm so glad to hear that it's too big... room to grow into and time for you to take your little bundle back to the store so you can show Ms. Know-It-Nothing that it fits.

  27. Is it mean of me to hope that you took the baby to that store wearing the sweater? :)
